The old Pop n' Slap:

Ahhh... another thing I learned on my own. I remember hearing the lovely tone of a Pop n' Slap on some good old Red Hot Chili Peppers (higher Ground)

Popping is basically lifting a string and then letting it go as it returns to its original location it will hit against the fret board creating a nice sharp tone. To do this you must use your fingers and just raise the string just enough to get the right effect. To much and you could lose your tuning and flatten your strings faster.

Slapping is just the opposite. You Slap the string Creating another Sharp tone yet it is different than the popping sound. Most People Slap the strings with their thumb. To Get the best tone I use the side of my thumb. where the joint is. You don't need to Slap very hard just enough to get the right sound.

Here's a little example enjoy.

Note: S = Slap, P= Pop
